Your Adventure Begins Here. Things to Do Around Anstruther and Crail

Your adventure begins here. Things to do...

Highland cow on Fife Coastal path

01 See the highland coos!

In 2019, we started our small fold of Highland cattle. We got two sweet youngsters, Martha and Morag, and they were joined by Murron and Mum, Dora a year later. In May 2023, Morag gave birth to Dougal, and you’ll often spy him running around doing zoomies.

The proudest member of our herd is the OG Marty, a retired Aberdeen Angus and a local favourite. He’s one of the biggest coos in Fife, and he’s one of the loveliest too.

People come from far and wide to see our cows and luckily, they stay on site so can be viewed during your stay.

If you are lucky enough to be visiting in the winter months you will see them being fed outside the house every morning often with a beautiful sunrise.

02 Walk the coastal path

Spanning 117 miles from the Firth of Forth in the south to the Firth of Tay in the north, the Fife Coastal Path is an impressive and expansive stretch of sand and sea. We’re exceptionally lucky to be situated right next to it, allowing you to explore.

Take a stroll past our Highland coos, and you’ll find a host of wildlife that includes a vast array of birdlife and, if you’re lucky, dolphins. Pack a picnic and spend the day enjoying the sands, crabbing, and fishing. You might even fancy a 15-minute walk to Cellardyke tidal pool for a dook!

03 Take a boat trip to the Isle of May

The Isle of May provides an unforgettable day trip from 1st April to 30th September, and you can catch a boat in Anstruther. On your journey to the island, you might even be lucky enough to spot a whale alongside the pods of dolphins in the water.

While on the island, you are sure to come across an array of wildlife. It’s one of the best puffin spots in the UK, and it is home to as many as 2,000 seal pups throughout the autumn and winter months. It’s a magical place for those who want to embrace Scottish marine life.

There are plenty of seasonal highlights, promising adventure no matter what time of year you visit. Advance booking in advisable on this popular trip.

04 Visit local fishing villages

Located in the heart of picturesque East Neuk, you’ll find Clover Cottage is just a short drive to Anstruther and Crail - located on either side of us. As you journey further along the coast, you will also come across the quaint villages of Pittenweem, St Monans, and Elie.

East Neuk comprises all the fishing villages in the area, bundling them together and leaving you with plenty to explore. Each of them is beautiful in its own right, some with stretches of sandy beaches where you can dip your toes in the cool water.

There are plenty of museums and buildings that document the rich history of the area, and the local cuisine reflects a strong fishing heritage. There are some incredible restaurants to choose from, offering a selection of dishes that truly leave you with a taste of Scotland

05  Visit St Andrews

The historic town of St Andrews is a mere 20-minute drive from Clover Cottage. One of the most well-known places in Fife, there is plenty to do here and something to occupy everyone. The cathedral is perhaps the most famous landmark alongside the old abandoned castle that has long since fallen to ruin. These areas are of great historical significance and can be toured for a low fee.

You also have the option to take a swing on the world-famous Old Course, known across the globe as the oldest golf course in existence. It’s also home to a beautiful  five-star resort, so if you want a relaxing trip to the spa after touring the grounds, this is your best bet.

Alongside fascinating museums and delectable dining, St Andrews is also home to sandy beaches that make for a lovely evening walk before you head back to the cottage. There are several to choose from, each of which is lined with plenty of selections for chippies and ice cream.

06 Golf

Scotland is the home of golf, and with some of the most famous courses in the world found right here in Fife, this is the perfect chance to try your hand at a few games. As we already mentioned, the Old Course is located in St Andrews and is a 25-minute drive away.

However, there are a handful of courses near the Cottage, including the Crail Golfing Society (5 minutes), Kingsbarns Golf Links (10 minutes), and The Golf House Club Elie (15 minutes). Each of these greens promises a great opportunity to practice your swing and get some exceptional games in on a traditional Scottish green.
